TV and web cameras given green light in B.C. courtroom:

For the first time in B.C. history, cameras will be allowed to broadcast the final arguments of Canada’s polygamy trial.

It will be interesting to see if this will help the push for allowing Twitter in courtrooms.

Clever but morally questionable advertising is fine with me, that is, as long as you make it a little more obvious that you also operate a donation website. Looking at you, Groupon.

I wonder if they reconsidered this ad campaign after Kenneth Cole’s recent PR disaster.

Fake news, manufactured, hyped, rehashed, retracted — until at the end of the week you know no more than at the beginning. You really might as well wait for a weekly like the Economist to tell you what the net position is at the end of the week.

To follow the daily or hourly news cycle is the media equivalent of day-trading: it’s frenzied, pointless and usually unprofitable. I’d much rather read an item which just showed me the photos or documents. And if you’re going to write some text, take a position or explain something to me. Give me opinion or reference; just don’t pretend you’re providing news. That’s not news.

But the “If-it-bleeds-it-leads” news portals are giving Canadians an incomplete picture of crime. What three-minute news clips don’t provide is context. The standard violent crime is counted in seconds. The consequences — for offender and victim — are counted in years. But the footprints leading up to violent crime are usually counted in a lifetime of tragic vignettes. That’s where the real story is.”

I know this will stun all three of you out there who thought Rolling Stone magazine covers were shot under strict Dogma 95 rules, but it seems photo editors at the magazine did themselves a little bit of doctoring on cover gal Katy Perry. And I couldn’t feel more deceived. You mean to tell me she had SOCKS on? That ruins the whole fantasy! Anyway, allow me to defend Photoshopped magazine covers for a moment: they look really good. There you go. Argument made.
